GIVE TO ARCH STREET
There are so many ways to make regular, special and extraordinary financial gifts in support of the Mission and Ministry of the Arch Street United Methodist Church.
Annual or Identified Gifts:
Members and friends of ASUMC pledge to make a regular weekly, monthly or annual contribution in support of the general operating expenses of the church. These expenses include but are not limited to paying staff salaries, facility expenses and regular program costs. This category of giving is the most basic and most important to the financial health of the church. Commitment and consistency are essential and greatly appreciated.
Designated Gifts:
Members and friends, in addition to their Annual Gifts or Identified Gifts, support various special initiatives such as the Youth Mission Trip, the Arch Street Community Music School, Grace Café, Serenity House, Building Fund and the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.
Capital Campaign Gifts:
Responding to our civic duty, as required by the city building code and to ensure public safety, the congregation took the proactive step to conduct a high-reach inspection of the exterior of the church building. The engineering firm CVM completed an assessment of the spire in April 2019. They found areas of concern and in conversation with the city they recommended safety precautions. Sidewalk protection has been installed on both Arch Street and Broad Street. In addition, a plan for surrounding the spire in protective netting is in process for the Spring 2020.
Arch Street UMC’s steeple is one of Philadelphia’s most prominent landmarks, sitting at the very heart of the city, passed by tens of thousands of people daily. Our successful record of property care and use positions the congregation to attract capital contributions both from within the congregation and the community-at-large. With the creation of an affiliated non-profit called The Center – Philadelphia, the congregation has increased its capacity to raise funds, engage new people with our social justice work and involve community leaders in preserving the building for civic as well as sacred uses.
Preliminary estimates suggest the total restoration of the spire could take several million dollars to be raised over two to three years. We are launching the first phase of a capital campaign to save and stabilize this icon with a goal of raising no less than $300,000 to install protective netting and to engage an engineering study to design the details of a total restoration. Over $80,000 has been raised so far. The Preservation Alliance has offered to assist with promotion and outreach and city leaders such as the CEO of the Center City District, the President of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority and the Mayor are very interested in assisting the congregation. Broad and Arch Streets are at the crossroads of commerce, government, tourism, activism and everyday life. ASUMC stands tall bearing witness to the critical role faith communities play in ensuring a just, loving and civil society. Please consider making a gift to this first phase of the Spire Restoration Project. Checks with Spire Restoration on the memo line maybe sent to Arch Street UMC, 55 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
